So how did it turn out?
I have a similar situation I am dealing with right now and am researching the law myself. It was my fault but the man is demanding a huge sum of money out of court. Did you find any good online resources about the law in Japan? Thanks for sharing your experiences!

In my case, I finally ended up paying for my fees only. I actually tried to call the lady to let her know that it would be fair for her to pay for her own damages, as she had a part of responsibility too, but she didn't pick up the phone. It was probably intentionnal of her, because she knew I would have had the advantage in court. Indeed, the counseling service did tell me that the responsibility was shared and so should the fees be. At the police station, on the other hand, I was told not to sue her, if I am good person, as she could end up paying a lot for something she was not 100% responsible for, which clearly says that bicycles still have the advantage in such kind of accidents..
In your case, did you declare this accident with the police station? Try to take an appointment with the counseling service, they probably know the situation quite well and double-check with the police station. In your defense, an accident never involves 1 person only, besides, the driver of the car should be in control of his/her vehicle to avoid such accidents... Good luck!
